Back Up Your iWeb Sites

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Murphy MaciWeb tries to hide all the messy stuff involved in creating web content. You never see a single line of html. You never have to pick a place to save your files. It all happens automagically.
iWeb isn’t worried about backing up all your hard work. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry about it. Creating a backup is easy. Do it as frequently or infrequently as you dare.

But remember, the movies, the photos, every page that you painstakingly arranged - it’s all in one file. If it gets damaged you’ll be kicking yourself. Especially when you see how simple it is to give yourself some insurance.

Take it another step: Copy the file created in this Snippet to another drive - or better yet - another computer.

Creating Custom Icons

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

duckieSometimes the simple things don’t seem so simple. OS X is discrete if nothing else. Chores that required a big button in Windows might seem hidden to a new Mac user.

In Windows you could open the properties panel for any shortcut and click a button to change its icon. On your Mac it’s a cut and paste operation. Bonus: You can use any image file to create your own fancy icons. Watch the Snippet to see how.

iTunes Trickery

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Murphy MacLike so many things on your Mac, sometimes the most powerful features lurk just a keystroke away. There are many places the Option key works wonders. iTunes is one of them.

The little arrows littered throughout your library are designed to land you in the iTunes Music store. Don’t let them lull you in so easily. Try holding the Option key while you click one of those arrows.

Murphy Mac

Your toolbar says a lot about you. You can leave it the way it is, or you can make it your own.

Add buttons like Delete or Info. You can even add important files or folders.

Do all the buttons look the same to you? Try displaying the names of the buttons.

Try it in Windows too.

Navigating the Terminal

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Murphy MacThis Snippet will ease us into the Terminal. There’s a ton to cover so this is just a brief introduction to a very powerful tool.

IMPORTANT: The Terminal is dangerous. An ill-formed command will wipe files from your disk without warning. You can severely damage your Mac with seemingly harmless intentions. Always proceed with caution when using the Terminal. And back up your files frequently.

See this Snippet for a demonstration of the harm Terminal can cause.

What about MS Windows?
